Cosmetology is a career that offers a good living.  The size and location of the salon, and the ability to attract and keep a regular clientele are key factors in determining the total income of cosmetologists.  According to the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing & Regulation (DLLR), entry level cosmetologists in the state average $14.50/hour plus tips.  With hard work and time to build up their clientele, those with experience and talent can earn considerably more, as do the self-employed.  

 

It also offers flexible employment options including part time, full time or self-employment.  Work schedules may include evenings and weekends, times when beauty salons are busiest. 

 

There is also a wide variety of professional choices available to cosmetologists - these include Hairstylists, Salon Owner or Manager, Fashion Show Stylist, Platform Artist and Educator, Beauty Magazine Writer or Editor, and Salon Chain Manager.  

 

Career Outlook 
The Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2008-09 Edition, projects an employment growth rate for cosmetologist of 14% between 2006 and 2016 which is faster than the average for all occupations.
 
The Maryland Career and Workforce Information estimates a growth rate of employment for beauty-related occupations of 15 to 20% between 2004 and 2014.

Career Considerations 

The school feels that Students interested in pursuing a career in cosmetology or a related field should consider all aspects of such a decision.  Persons who want to become professionals in this field must:
  •  Have finger dexterity and a sense of form and artistry
  •  Enjoy dealing with the public and be able to follow a client's direction
  •  Keep abreast of the latest fashions and beauty techniques
  • Work long hours while building a personal clientele in order to earn the desired income
  • Make a strong commitment to the educational process and complete the program of study
  •  Learn the skills necessary to operate a personal business


In addition, applicants and Students should be aware that:

  • The work can be arduous and physically demanding because of long hours standing with hands at shoulder level.
  •  A personal investment may be required for advertising and promotions such as printing of business cards. 
  •  There will be exposure to various chemicals and fumes that may cause allergic reactions or could be harmful if used incorrectly.
  •  The practice of safety and sanitation is essential for effective and successful performance within the industry.
