The Industry
Cosmetology is a career that offers a good living. The size and location of the salon, and the ability to attract and keep a regular clientele are key factors in determining the total income of cosmetologists. According to the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing & Regulation (DLLR), entry level cosmetologists in the state average $14.50/hour plus tips. With hard work and time to build up their clientele, those with experience and talent can earn considerably more, as do the self-employed.
It also offers flexible employment options including part time, full time or self-employment. Work schedules may include evenings and weekends, times when beauty salons are busiest.
There is also a wide variety of professional choices available to cosmetologists - these include Hairstylists, Salon Owner or Manager, Fashion Show Stylist, Platform Artist and Educator, Beauty Magazine Writer or Editor, and Salon Chain Manager.
